The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a clearer vision.
The president noted that the developers is now reimagining the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.
This announcement echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.
Here is the entire text from Ismailer's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”
Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game testing phase was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a clearer identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s poised to achieve its ambition to our fans.
Our confidence in this project grows every day. To further the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. Following some time of conversations, he starts with us on next week.
His leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half producing and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in greeting him soon. We are all excited to continue observing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to come.
David
The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary explains. "Take on the competition with fresh skills, risks, and challenges that evolve every session. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, gamble everything, and trust your squad can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced launch window or consoles, but fans can look forward to more updates as production continues.
