Sources indicate that formerPresident Trump conveyed a unambiguous demand to Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro: abandon office – and depart the country – immediately.
Per reports, the U.S. leader allegedly held a telephone conversation with his South American opposite number, who is the target of a prolonged pressure campaign that has included a major deployment of warships off Venezuela's northern coast.
"You can secure your safety and those closest to you, but you need to leave the nation right away," Trump allegedly declared, promising safe passage for Maduro, his wife and his son "conditional on he consented to step down right away."
Nevertheless, the Venezuelan leader reportedly declined to resign on the spot and is said to have made a list of counter-demands, including international immunity from prosecution and being allowed to give up civilian authority while maintaining control of the military.

This development represents the most recent increase of strains between the two countries. Earlier this week, Trump reportedly held talks with his leading foreign policy team to discuss the Venezuelan situation, though details of that gathering were not revealed.
