There are "no preparations" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has stated.
Last Thursday the US president said he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital soon to examine the war in Ukraine.
A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House said the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "required".
The White House did not share additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.
Trump had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.
Some reports claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with insiders indicating Trump had pushed him to relinquish extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.
However, on Monday the American president supported a truce plan backed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the war on the current front line.
"Let it be cut the way it is," he said.
Moscow has frequently resisted against halting the current line of contact.
The Russian government was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov said on this week, implying that halting hostilities would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.
The "fundamental issues" of the conflict needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of extensive requirements that involve the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.
The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.
He also said the sole subject that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the delivery of extended-range arms to Ukraine.
The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader recently occurred before speculation that the United States was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could theoretically target Russian territory.
Zelensky asserted it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had emerged as a "significant input" in international relations", he commented.
