One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the anime covering one chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
