Milan Hockey Arena Setbacks May Leave NHL Players on Untested Ice
Put aside poor conditions. Currently, the surface isn't ready.
With NHL players gearing up to return to the Olympics for the initial occasion in over a ten years, building work on the primary hockey venue for the Milano Cortina Games is going down to the wire.
Local organizers announced on Wednesday that the main trial competition for the 16,000-seat Santagiulia facility that was scheduled for December has been relocated to a more compact arena ā and that no new test event has been arranged yet.
The issue raises the prospect that there might not be a match held in the main arena until the competition begins for the women's initial games at the Olympics on 5 February ā 24 hours before the opening ceremony.
āThe timeline will be very close to the start of the Olympics, the timeline is very tight. However, we were aware,ā Milan-Cortina organizing body CEO Andrea Varnier stated recently.
The competition that was intended to evaluate the Santagiulia ice was part of the under-20 world championship from 8-14 December. That event has been transferred to the Rho Fiera hockey location, which is being set up inside a giant exhibition hall on the outskirts of Milan and will host lesser games during the Olympics.
Usually, new Olympic venues are tested at least the year before to hosting medal events. And with a large hockey arena, itās not just about the playing surface and making sure that the rink is prepared and safe. Itās additionally about checking concession stands, bathrooms and all other amenities inside a newly constructed contemporary stadium.
This new facility, which is being built by a private company, is slated to become the nation's biggest covered stadium. Following the Olympics, itās being considered as a potential upcoming venue of the ATP Finals tennis tournament.
In spite of the delays and worries, expensive tickets are already being purchased for events at the Santagiulia venue. Tickets for the menās gold medal game on 22 February ā the final day of the Olympics ā are going for as much as ā¬1,400 (over $1,600). This exceeds the price of any other sports event at the Milano Cortina Games. Only passes for the opening and closing ceremonies cost more.
The return of NHL players at the Olympics was announced in February of last year, with the premier hockey organization permitting its players to participate in the Winter Olympics for the initial occasion since 2014 in Sochi.
The menās Olympic hockey competition is set to take place from 11-22 February. The womenās tournament runs from 5-19 February.
