Accounts surfaced of several explosions and the roar of low-altitude aircraft in Caracas in the small hours of Saturday morning. This event has sparked allegations from Venezuela's authorities and demands for global intervention.
Venezuela's authoritarian regime has condemned the US of an act of "imperial aggression," claiming that former President Trump allegedly authorized military strikes against the Latin American state. In an public announcement, the government stated that attacks had impacted Caracas and three other provinces: Miranda, La Guaira state, and Aragua state.
"Our only objective of these strikes is to seize control of our nation's key assets, especially its crude oil and minerals," Venezuela asserted.
Caracas appealed to the international community to denounce the strikes, which it described a "blatant breach of international law" that endangered millions of lives at risk in danger.
Locals described experiencing approximately several detonations around 2:00 AM in the morning. Residents in different neighborhoods allegedly ran into the streets.
"The earth trembled. It was horrible. We heard explosions and aircraft in the distance," stated one resident.
Smoke was observed pouring from two defense sites in Caracas: the La Carlota airbase military airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna army base, where president Nicolás Maduro is reported to live.
The president of neighboring Colombia, Gustavo Petro, stated on a social platform that "Currently they are attacking Venezuela... attacking it with projectiles." He called for an urgent meeting of the Security Council.
Colombia, which recently became a member of the UNSC, announced it would initiate operational protocols at its frontier with Venezuela.
The reported strikes follow a months-long campaign of pressure by the Trump administration against the Maduro administration. Since last summer, there has been a substantial US military buildup off the country's northern coast and a series of airstrikes on ships accused of drug trafficking.
The administration has stated "a state of emergency" and directed all national defence protocols to be implemented. It has also summoned its political forces to take to the streets and "denounce this foreign aggression."
The White House and the Pentagon did not promptly commented on inquiries for a statement regarding the events.
