Eurovision Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

A new acronym surfaced a couple of months into the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from medical experts like paediatricians. Typically, it is unusual for physicians to attend to a minor who has been bereaved of their whole family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that genocidal acts are still being committed. Authorities rejects these claims, just as it denies everything it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, although several European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is treated differently.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A competition that initially championed peace has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
