The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
