Britain's administration is testing out a fresh approach on leaving the EU, but this isn't equivalent to a change in direction. The adjustment is mostly in tone.

The objective is to link Farage to a well-known example of political mis-selling, suggesting he is unreliable; that he exploits discontent and sows division but cannot manage effectively.
Recent suspensions of local representatives from the party's administrative wing supports that message. Leaked footage of a video conference showed internal disputes and recrimination, demonstrating the challenges inexperienced figures face when providing community resources on limited budgets—much harder than distributing leaflets about cutting waste or managing borders.
This criticism is productive for Labour, but it requires the administration's own performance being sufficiently strong that choosing the challengers seems a dangerous experiment. Moreover, this is a message for a future campaign that may not occur until the end of the decade. If the leadership wish to appear as alternatives to populism, they must demonstrate in the interim with a clear, constructive program of their own.
There are limits to what can be achieved with a rhetorical shift, and the clock is ticking. How much easier to argue now that EU exit is harmful and his promoter untrustworthy if they had said so earlier. What additional choices might they have? Do they merit praise for acknowledging it today when other excuses have failed? Certainly. But the issue with reaching the obvious conclusion via the longest path is that people question the procrastination. Starting from the truth is faster.
