Addressing the Cashier Who Left Me Totally Wordless – My Hat's Off to You
It was a Sunday morning, and I found myself in a foul mood, filling up my mum’s car. It was a typical gas station that also functions as a grocery store, so you run the risk of joining a queue people bearing baskets of somewhat expensive items. This is a dreadful thing to occur when all you want is to pay for some fuel. Terrible.
Fourth in line I stood in the waiting line. There was only cashier operating, a youthful clerk. Something stood out in her demeanor. Once the slowpoke at the front of the queue had finally paid for his purchases, his sausage roll, and a carton of eggs, I was certain I heard the cashier tell him a wonderful day. Strange. Could be I misunderstood, or maybe she did say it and was being sarcastic. The thought crossed my mind if she might actually be a supporter in my battle with dithering, sharing my contempt for people who hold up straightforward customers including me.
Taking a step forward, to third in the queue. The next shopper of our line completed her gasoline purchase with notable efficiency. Again, the phrase came: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” To be precise, it was “have a wonderful day”. Someone from the US? In Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and hardly anyone here tells people those exact words, or even just a nice day. Highly unusual. Rarely does one encounter people from America frequenting this area, certainly not employed at gas stations or anywhere else.
Second in line at last. Following a senior shopper embroiled in a protracted effort with her basket, her food items, her purse and her loyalty card. This took an eternity. When she was done, the woman also was wished to have a fantastic day. Yes, American for sure. Confirming it was possible by saying something hilarious to her, to observe that response as they gaze at you, stoically, and say with absolute sincerity: “That is quite humorous.” Yet no idea came of a funny comment to say.
I just had to settle for the absolute sincerity – or an impersonation of it, that equates to identical in effect – while she stared directly into my eyes, deep into my soul, and wished me to have a great day. I felt better for it. A positive experience.
